NE Amputee Members Take on Adaptive Surfing with South Shields Surf
In July, members of NE Amputee embraced the thrill of the North Sea during two unforgettable adaptive surfing sessions with the incredible team at South Shields Surf. Set against the stunning (albeit cloudy) backdrop of the South Shields coastline, these sessions were more than just a sporting experience—they were a celebration of strength, connection, and the healing power of the sea.
With expert instructors and specially adapted equipment, the guys were supported every step of the way. Whether they were paddling out for the first time, catching their first wave or returning for some more fun, the sessions were tailored to meet individual needs, ensuring that everyone could participate safely and confidently.
The Power of Surfing for Amputees
Adaptive surfing offers a unique blend of physical and emotional benefits, especially for amputees:
🏄♀️ Physical Exercise That Empowers
Surfing is a full-body workout that builds core strength, balance, and coordination. For amputees, engaging in physical activity like surfing can help improve mobility, reduce muscle imbalances, and support overall rehabilitation. The dynamic movements involved in surfing also promote cardiovascular health and endurance.
🌊 Healing in the Water
Time spent in the ocean has proven therapeutic effects. The buoyancy of salt water reduces pressure on joints and limbs, making movement easier and more comfortable. The rhythmic motion of the waves and the sensory experience of being in nature can help reduce stress, anxiety, and even chronic pain.
💬 Confidence, Connection & Community
Adaptive surfing fosters a sense of achievement and independence. It’s a chance to push boundaries, try something new, and rediscover what’s possible. These sessions also brought NE Amputee members closer together, creating a supportive environment filled with encouragement, laughter, and shared triumphs.
“Being in the water gave me a sense of freedom I haven’t felt in years”.
A Huge Thank You
We’re incredibly grateful to South Shields Surf for their commitment to inclusive sport and for making these sessions so welcoming and empowering. Their passion and expertise helped create an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
To the NE Amputee community—your courage and enthusiasm continue to inspire. These sessions were a reminder that with the right support, the ocean is open to everyone.
While the weather was not on our side, it was still a great time! Here’s to more waves, more adventures, and more moments that remind us of our strength.
