🌊Surfing 2.0🌊

This summer, members of the North East Amputee Support Group (NE Amputee) enjoyed an unforgettable experience at South Shields Surf School, taking part in a series of adaptive surfing sessions on the North Sea coast. What began as an opportunity to try something different quickly became a day filled with laughter, encouragement, achievement and community spirit.

With the support of the experienced team at South Shields Surf, participants were able to get into the water using specialist adaptive equipment designed to make surfing accessible for people with a wide range of physical needs. The sessions were tailored to each individual, ensuring that everyone could take part safely and confidently, whether they were experiencing surfing for the very first time or returning to the waves for another adventure.

Adaptive surfing offers far more than just excitement. As well as helping to improve balance, coordination and overall fitness, it provides an opportunity to build confidence, challenge perceptions and reconnect with the outdoors. For many amputees, spending time in the sea can bring a real sense of freedom and independence, while sharing the experience with others who understand similar challenges creates lasting friendships and mutual support.

The weather may not always have been on our side, but it certainly did not dampen the enthusiasm of the group. From cheering each other on in the water to enjoying well-earned coffees and conversations afterwards, the sessions perfectly captured what NE Amputee is all about: bringing people together, supporting one another, and proving that life after limb loss can still be full of adventure.

A huge thank you goes to the team at South Shields Surf School for their commitment to making surfing accessible to everyone and for creating such a welcoming environment. Their passion for inclusive sport enabled our members to push boundaries, try something new and make memories that will last long after the wetsuits have been packed away.

At NE Amputee, we are always looking for new opportunities to help our members connect, grow in confidence and enjoy new experiences. The success of these surfing sessions has shown that, with the right support, there really are no limits to what can be achieved. Here's to more waves, more adventures and more opportunities to inspire one another in the months ahead. 🌊🏄‍♂️🦿

If our recent surfing sessions have inspired you to give adaptive surfing a try, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. South Shields Surf School continues to champion inclusive and adaptive surfing, helping people of all abilities experience the freedom, confidence and excitement that comes from getting out on the waves.
